West Bank residents of Jefferson Parish who live inside the flood protection system will vote on renewing the flood protection millage.

THIS MILLAGE IS NOT A NEW TAX.  It is a renewal not to exceed 4.75 mills that will help to continue funding West Jefferson Levee District capital projects such as levee lifts, and major maintenance of our flood control structures.  It will generate approximately $6.5 million dollars per year, and provides over 45% of the Levee District’s revenue.
The West Jefferson Levee District has invested over $23 million in levee lifts to date resulting in over 18 miles of levee raised prior to the U.S. Army Corps installing the levee armoring. Those lifts were completed in 2018 and the levee district is actively working to lift 2 sections of levee in the next few years and is coordinating with the Corps to ensure that over 22 miles of levees are lifted as necessary to maintain the system height. The West Jefferson Levee District is also working to begin planned major maintenance on our closure complexes within the next 2 years that will ensure the pumps and gates are in good repair and ready to respond to a storm event.
The flood protection system includes 80 miles of levees and floodwalls, 67 floodgates, and 3 closure complexes that work together to protect against storm surge and river flooding.
Renewal of this millage preserves critical funding that enables the West Jefferson Levee District to make necessary infrastructure investments vital to maintaining the integrity of our flood protection system.
